Indexed investing – also known as passive management – is a low-cost style of investing that aims to mirror the returns of a benchmark index. When you invest in an indexed option, your funds are invested in all or most of the companies and assets that make up that benchmark index.
This contrasts with an active management approach, which aims to outperform an index by researching and selecting individual companies and assets to invest in.
Hostplus offers 5 indexed investment options:
An index is a collection of investments that represents all or part of a particular market. Indexes are often used to measure the overall performance of that market.
Take the Australian share market for example. To measure the performance of the market as a whole, you take an average of the performance of the individual companies that are traded on the ASX (the Australian Securities Exchange). Because there are more than 2,000 companies traded (many of which are quite small), investment managers often focus on just the largest 200 companies. The specific index used to measure the performance of these 200 companies is called the S&P/ASX200.

1. SuperRatings Accumulation Fund Crediting Rate Survey – SR50 Balanced (60-76) Index, 31 October 2022. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance and should never be the sole factor considered when selecting a superannuation fund.
2. We have used Hostplus’ accumulation product for this comparison. Hostplus’ Indexed Balanced option available through our pension product will have a different return target, net investment returns and administration fees associated with it.
3. Vanguard's Growth option targets an asset mix of 30% defensive assets, which is higher than Hostplus' Indexed Balanced option, which targets an asset mix of 25% defensive assets. This means that Vanguard's Growth option is more defensive in nature and would ordinarily be expected to carry less investment risk. Vanguard’s Growth option can also invest up to 5% in cash.
